Congratulations to GM Alex Moiseyev of Dublin, OH who won the 2012 VA State Open, this makes his third title winning the Open in 1997, 1999, and 2012.

Congratulations to Ryan Pronk of Lynchburg, VA who won the 2012 Virginia State Open Championship which is his second Virginia State Championship title, two in a row, 2011 & 2012.

Congratulations to GM John Webster for winning 3rd, and Bill Salot 4th and Travis Weddle took 5th place. Ryan was the top finishing Virginia player therefore distinguishing himself for the State Title.

President Buck Smith recognized Ryan Pronk as the State Champion to be entered into the Virginia State Champion Winners Roster.

GM stands for Grand Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles given to distinguish players by WCDF.

Buck Smith - Tournament Director & Referee/Scorekeeper opened Friday morning's business meeting. The chairman of Old Dominion Checker Association welcomed 18 players, 8 from NC, 4 from VA, and 4 from OH, and 1 from PA. Officers remain as: Buck Smith as President and Ted Taylor as Vice-President, with Buck continuing as State Tournament Director for 2013. We voted to play a single class of Swiss with only a last round re-pair if necessary, lowest player gets the bye, and repeat byes awarded 2 points only. T separates player's opponent from player's accumulated game points. (win=2, draw=1, loss=0, bye=3)

We are glad to see Virginia players reasserting their dominance in the Old Dominion State Open since the lose of such Masters like: Les Balderson, O.A. Morea, Will Criner, Earl Luffman, and aged out Paul Davis. They also didn't have two young guns, Vic Habgood and Kevin Burks, as well as the Taylor boys this year.

Players were welcomed to Super 8 Hotel by a nice office desktop display announcing "The 95th Annual Old Dominion Checker Association Virginia State Open Tournament"

Ratings from ACF, Before and After Ratings are the results of a player's rating before this tournament and after it was recalculated from this score-sheet by ACF rating processor, Joe Moore.

Bill Salot gave out his sheets with six checker problems and whoever were the first 4 players to correctly solve either problem would win a classic checker book. Alex stated on forum, "Actually it was just one interesting idea but handling in 6 different ways, so - there were 6 problems in reality! Me and John Webster by working hard for 10 minutes and solved 5 of them, then 1st round started."

The Total Cash Prize was $380.00 from 18 entry fees ($360.00) plus $33 left over from last year.

The Virginia State Open was an ACF Sanctioned Tournament by following the guidelines of the Official Guide for ACF Tournament Directors, and all players were either current ACF members or paid their dues.

We welcome the three Amish players: Joe Weaver, John Troyer, and Joe Weaver who traveled from middle Ohio to participate.

We appreciate Ryan Pronk calling in the tournament announcements about the VA Opening in The News & Advance, and arranging the nice Saturday article.

Alex Moiseyev stated his appreciation for Old Dominion Sponsors & Promoters arranging his complimentary hotel room. A World Champion brings status and dignity to Bedford and builds interest and enthusiasm for this Old Dominion State Tournament. Hotel owners got his signature on newspaper article and their picture made with Alex as a Checker Champion icon - celebrity guest.

The News & Advance did a nice Saturday newspaper article quoting GM Moiseyev and other players.

Bedford was once a busy railroad hub, but now a small town with many gifts/crafts, tourist shops, restaurants, and Bed & Breakfast homes which Alex stated, "On Friday night I had a nice dinner at Liberty Station (former Railroad Station) in fancy restaurant.

This was a fun tournament, a house full of excellent checker talent, weather was two wonderful cool Indian summer days, and many players enjoyed dinner and fellowship in Bedford Thursday & Friday evening. Everyone had a great time!
